Welcome To Unison

You've finally found the courage to make the phone call. You are going to call Unison Behavioral Health Group and ask for help. But who will you find at the other end of the line? Will they really understand what you need?

"Our job is to make people feel welcomed and comfortable - comfortable to disclose very personal and private information," says Gloria Oliver, Director of Short Term Services at Unison.

The first stop when seeking help at Unison is the intake department. People can talk with a member of our intake team in two ways. Individuals can call (419) 693-0631 or they can walk into our main office located at 1425 Starr Ave.*

"Our intake staff helps people find the services they really need. And, sometimes that means referring people to other more appropriate service providers. Our staff is well versed in both Unison's services and other services available in our community," Gloria explains.

The intake clinician helps the client identify the problem that he or she is seeking services for. The staff member also collects demographic information and physical, mental and medical histories.

The next step is to meet with a member of Unison's diagnostic team. The job of the assessor is to determine whether an individual meets the criteria for services at Unison and recommend which services would be most appropriate. "It's important to understand that to receive services at Unison, a person must have a diagnosable mental illness. It must be a problem significant enough to impact an individual's life," Gloria says.

The assessor also explains the treatment recommendation to the new client, helps them fill our the paperwork needed to start services at Unison, and introduces the client to billing staff to discuss fees. The diagnostic assessment lasts about ninety minutes.

"The most important job of the assessor is to engage the client into the treatment process. We want people to feel a sense of hope that something is about to happen - that things will get better," Gloria says.

Last year, Unison intake staff received almost 10,000 phone calls. Over 2,300 people were admitted for services.
