Facts About Mental Illness

Mental illness does not discriminate. It strikes men and women in about equal proportion and affects people of all ages, races ethnic groups and socio-economic classes.

• Twenty percent of adult Americans - one in five - will face a mental illness in their lifetime that is severe enough to require treatment. Many more have problems that prevent them from enjoying their live. (Source: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.)

• Mental disorders affect 40 million Americans each year. Data shows:

  • Twenty million experience phobias.

  • Nearly four million suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorders.
